Having XP Problems? I did and found out why!

Having strange XP problems? I did and found out why!
This probably has something to do with disabling ACPI in system BIOS which I have done since day one, but I have never seen this one before! I recently transferred my drives (directly without a format or anything!) from a KG7 to a KR7. After the usual reboots, everything worked perfectly! Even the GF3! I finally got around to formatting the system and installing XP from scratch. Nearly at the end of the installation the system hang! SCSI HBA lights and drive lights blinking up and down faster than KITT's red hood lights! RESET time. I restarted and had to go through the setup routing AGAIN. After plugging in my reg info and network stuff I went out to dinner.

Came back to the prompt about bumping up resolution from 640x480. Everything seemed fine so I started mapping out drives, etc. BAM! Machine froze! WTF??? I thought it could be related to 4in1's so I reset and installed WinRAR so I could extract my 4in1 4.38a's and get the show moving. Everything was going ok, installed video (23.11) and sound drivers (audigy ex) without a hitch. When I installed MS Office XP is where the problems started. This installation comes off an application server a few doors away and usually is pretty fast (1000mbps between nodes!) but it halted about midway saying the source was no longer available. I couldn't get out the internet as well. Damn 3COM management NIC! Finally, I go into the device manager and what do I see under computer? NOT ACPI, NOT standard PC but MPS Uniprocessor PC! WTF??! I restart from the Windows XP disk delete the partition and start over. :| When I see the prompt for F6 for SCSI controller, I hit F5 and scroll up to STANDARD PC. From that point on, NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER! The incorrect HAL will really screw you so if you can't explain weird stuff I would highly recommend checking that FIRST! Usually when ACPI is disabled in the system BIOS, Windows will install using the STANDARD PC HAL. Looks like from this time on I'm specifying just to be sure!

Cheers!
