My friend's brother is having a interesting problem with his Dell Laptop. At college, he was able to access the broadband internet, but when he returned home from college and plugged his laptop into our router at home, the computer wouldn't allow him to access the internet. When he accesses the Internet it tells him that "No connection to the Internet is currently available. To view Internet content that has been saved on your computer, click Work Offline." I click Try Again and it gives me a second error and still won't connect to the internet. I have already have the Internet Options set correctly to Automatically detect IP settings and I have never used dialing a connection. I am using IE 6.0, and XP professional. I have turned off the built in firewall and it is still not working. Does anybody have any ideas? Anything would be very helpful. As well, I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling his network card, but that hasn't helped. I even shut down the System Restore tool before doing this. PLEASE HELP!

can you ping any addresses at all or is it just an IE problem? see if you can ping yahoo.com or IP address 4.2.2.1 . if it's an IE issue, he may be setup to go through a proxy. in which case you just go to tools > internet options > content > LAN settings and uncheck proxy if it's there.

Edit: just saw all of nananki333 post, he is on it ;)

check and see if the university had a proxy for internet access. You'll need to uncheck the box for use a proxy server, or for an automated script also.

nanaki333 is correct, try opening a command window and pinging sites like www.google.com and www.yahoo.com to see if your getting a response. If you are, the connection is there, but the browser isnt configured correctly.
