three different systems

tried it on win2k, win98se

mobo is on a dell, abit bf6, gigabyte.. unsure of what model

processors- p3 800eb, p3 650e, and p2 350

software power dvd... but that wont make a difference cause it wont work in windows.. just the led blinks and once it stops blinking and i double click on the drive it just asks me about the formating

My pioneer 1x dvd-rom did that after I mistakenly flashed it with the wrong firmware upgrade...flashed it with the scsi bios when it should have been the atapi one...acted just like what you have mentioned...

What does it detect in the bootup black screens?

Does it identify the drive correctly in system devices?

Does the drive load any dos drivers or did it add any lines to the config.sys?

I don't think DVD and CD-ROM drives like being put in as slave drives; have you made sure that the DVD is set to master and it's plugged into the motherboard as a master drive?

I had a defective DVD drive that did something similar. I knew it was defective because I bought 2 identical drives -- one only read CDs and could not recognize DVDs. The other worked perfectly. I exchanged the bad one for another.
