Having trouble with wireless adapter on old Lenovo

I have a T400 thinkpad that's about four and a half years old now, and recently the wireless adapter has been acting up. I have the latest Ubuntu installed on this (32 bit). A couple of weeks ago this laptop started giving me problems, along with the wireless deciding to connect, work for a short time, and then decide to not receive a signal although it would tell me it was still connected. I thought this was a part of the other problems, but upon freshly reinstalling the os I found that it still does this. I plan on replacing the laptop soon but would still like to use this one. Is it something wrong with the adapter and should I buy an external wireless device, or is there something that I should try first? Thanks for any help you guys can give.

I'd suggest first opening the case and reseating the wireless modem connections, then installing an updated Linux driver before spending money on new hardware.

During the T400's lifespan it was manufactured with several different wireless LAN and WAN devices i.e., Intel, Realtek, Ericsson, and Qualcom. Since you run Ubuntu, please post your specific T400 model number and which wireless device/s are installed (mfg. and model).

It's possible that the Ubuntu 12.04 wireless driver, for your specific hardware, needs to be changed to a different version. If a driver update doesn't fix your connectivity problem, then the device itself may be failing.
