Having trouble transferring files on a network....

Hi, I just got a new Dell Inspiron 9300 and I'm trying to get my music and step mania files off of my desktop, but I'm having trouble.

In IE when I type \\BRADY (The name of my desktop) in my laptop, it doesnt find anything. And when I type \\BRADYLAPTOP, on my desktop it doesn't find anything either. I have a shared folder on each computer.

The weird thing is when I browse the work group computers on my desktop, my laptop is there, but when I double click it it says "Could not connect...blah blah blah....The network path was now found."

I've also tried \\Private IP, which doesn't work either. Any suggestions?

Try disabling the Firewall on both LAN adapters and then see if you can get to one another by \\IPAddress. If it still fails make sure you can ping one another ok.

Whats it mean to ping another computer? I'll make sure all firewalls are off,

ping is a utility to detect remote hosts and computers, you can verify if the computer is on the network by pinging its address.

bet your winxp firewall is blocking your file and print sharing...turn off.

Are you on a wireless network with WEP enabled? Do you have conflicting IP addresses on your network? Do you have a server?

Disabled simple file sharing if these are XP machines.

Dumbest thing ever by MS.

You can do it by going to the tools-file options menu and then going to the view tab. At the bottom make sure simple file sharing is turned off.

How are the two PCs networked? Wired thru a router? Wireless?

What OSs?

Are folders shared?

They're both XP Pro pcs, both connected through a router, one is wireless. Windows firewall is disabled on both. I'll try to disable simple file sharing

BTW the router is a Linksys WRT54G

The thing to do is to make sure that the Sharing are working and MAP the Drives (or folders).
