Having trouble running Unreal Tournament.

Just got through installing UT on my friends machine and it is running unusually slow. Here are his specs:

Tbird 1.4
Epox 8kha+
512 DDR
Gainward ti 200
Santa cruz Sound card
Win 98se
Dlink NIC

Installed the GOTY edition, patched to 4.36.
He was on the 21.81 drvs, then went to the 23.11s but no change. Didn't have time to download the 28.32s.
All other games are running fine. Although the Q3 bench was a little slower than my ECS/1.33/G2Ultra rig.
I'm just wondering if anyone has had trouble with this same setup? Just to give you an idea of how slow----
Mine: 1152 x 864 x 32 = 82 fps
His: 1024 x 768 x 16 = 50 fps

I want to think there is a setting enabled that's slowing it down but I checked AA and it is disabled. Not sure what else to look for.

You're running it in direct3d right?

Yes, I believe so. I have had trouble running the 23.11s in UT but the 21.81s were fine. I am using them now. I'll get the 28.32s as soon as I can and will try those. My friend is not that bothered by it but with that kinda hardware he should be gettin better than that.

True. You have tried it in 32 bit color right? I know on my old system whenever I put it in 16 bit color it struggled big time. Don't ask me why, it just did.

Make sure you are using hardware rendering instead of software rendering. I think it is in the video setup somewhere.

I believe that if he's running direct3d then he has to be running in hardware mode.

Turn off AA (NONE) turn off EAX or surround sound, verticle sync off.

If that doesn't do it, why not uninstall the game and try it again... did you get any problems, hangs, errors when installing UT and the 4.36 patch?
