Currently running W2K SP4 on Iwill KK-266, Athlon 1.2 OC'd to 1.33. Primary drive is 80G Maxtor and I'm running out of space. Also have secondary 80G WD. Bought a new Seagate 160G with the idea of replacing the primary 80G. This is an old dual boot thing: W98 in on C, W2K is on E.
I put the 160G in an external USB 2.0 enclosure and used Partition Magic 6 to copy drives C and E to the 160, then made partition F for data strorage. I then used SyncBack to backup files from current F to the new data partition on the 160, which would be drive F (the secondary 80G HDD will remain - currently it is a backup for the primary. Hopefully that will be replaced by the 200G Maxtor I got on Black Friday and serve as backup for the 160.
My idea was then to just replace the primary 80 with the 160 and be ready to go. However, the OS would not load, then the BIOS would not even recognize the HD. I tried to do a repair with the W2K installation CD. No go. I even tried to do a reinstall of W2K and that didn't work. I tried FDISK and SYS. I tried everything I could think of. At one point the OS loaded just enough to do a chkdsk on drive F. It took over 2 hours for it to rescue each and every data file (some 60G) from the status of orphan to being in the right directory. After seven hours of trying I switched the original HDDs back, but even then there are some minor glitches in the operations.
Where did I go wrong? What steps should I take now? Should I wipe the 160 and do something else? If so, what?
Thanks in advance.....
