This is my problem,
His computer is made from my old parts and housed in a cheap case. I have tried installing XP on there before but I got a problem when it was copying files to start the setup. It would reach a random file and hang. Sometimes it got to 70%, sometimes 4%. I had trouble installing win2k also, but I eventually got it on their(The 2k CD's were burned, and I had to swap CDs a few times for it to read all the files. The XP CD is the original). I went through their comp and finally decided that it may have been the optical drives(one was an old 10x hitachi CD-ROm, the other a very cheap 24x that seems to be having mechanical problems and will be trashed soon) . I just picked up a 56x Cd-ROM from Best Buy and installed it. It seemed to be a bit better in that it read all the burned CD's that the older drives also had problems reading. However. when istalling XP, I got the same copy error. Any ideas? I remember something about some people having problems with geforce 2MX400s and installing XP, but I don't remember if this would fit. I have tried most of the obvious stuff, like turning off all the ports I am not using, disabled the Promise controller(I am using just the normal VIA controller ATM), set the AGP aperture back down to 1x.

the system config:
Asus A7V
Duron 950Mhz
512MB PC-133 SD-RAM
Geforce 2 MX400
56x CD-ROM(says that it is made by BENQ)

I had the same problem a few days ago doing a fresh install of XP.
I disconnected all the drives except the cdrom and primary HD.
Like you said, it would periodically hang at random files. After about 10 tries it finally worked. (I was also using an original disk)

Maybe try doing a low-level format of the primary HD. Proper boot disks can be downloaded from the manufacturer's webpage.
Also, when it prompts you to select a drive and format, try doing the full format, not the quick. You could even try deleting/reinstalling the partition.

Other than that, just keep trying it. It's a real pain but mine eventually worked.

Keep the faith,
Brian
