having trouble installing dvd-rom

when i install my dvdrom..my system wont read my dvd-rw, or hangs at the windows xp loading screen, or it displays wierd symbols when i try to install it from 'add hardware'

i took out my dvd-rw and it installed fine. i just cant have them both working at same time

Are the drives jumpered correctly? Some dvd rom drives also seem to only work correctly if they are master on the channel. Is the bios set to auto detect for the drive locations?

yea, bios is set to auto detect. i installed both of them alone on master but neither drives will work if its slave.

any help is appreciated

You seemed to cover all the bases Kaz. If the drive needs to run on master, you need to give it a channel to be master on.

Maybe its time to get another controller card? Its always best to keep IDE devices on their own channels anyways.
