hi, i have an HP Pavillion pc. i used to have an ATI X300 pci-e and now i bought a X1600XT to replace it.

i took out the old car, but i cant seem to get the new one (or the old one) back in its place. i cant get it to fit all the way into the slot. there is this retention mechanism which only moves slightly to the sides:

but i cant get it into the corresponding part of the card:

if i manages to get it in, the the other side of the card doesnt fit through the expansion slot.

sorry if im not making much sense, can anyone help please?

maybe someone a little wiser can correct me but i'm not sure how important that little clip is. that clip should go just over the back "fin" of the graphics card to help keep it in place. try to add a little more force to push it. keep in mind that i did break my clip... but my 7800gt with nv silencer still sit just fine. it should move over to make room but i couldn't see that mine had moved over so i snapped it.

This is the very reason I hate those cases used by major computer OEM. I think they somehow intentionally make these things somehow NON-standard. Where do they manage to find these pieces of junk that they use for cases.

Give me a custom built system built perferrably in a good Lian Li case.

Good luck.

i'll see what i can do :)

about ignoring the little clip, like TrandM said, i tried that but the other end doesnt go in as much as it should, when i switched the pc on nothing came up on the monitor (although i could hear a fan spin) so i think it means that it indeed didnt connect fully.

EDIT: heres a higher rez pic, its the best angle i could get im afraid:

I just messed with my bro's Dell which had the same retention mechanism. All you do is pull it back towards the bottom of the case. It will then rest in the little gap between the card and its socket connectors

you have to pull the clip back/down, i thought that even though you were pulling it you still couldn't get it in. my main point is go ahead and put a little force behind moving the clip but i'm not sure if you should worry about breaking the clip. I wouldn't recommend it but not to worry if it happens. Seat the part of the card that goes to the back of the case and as you are bringing down the rest of the card, try to move the clip towards the bottome of your case. While i was doing this, i snapped my clip but that was because i didn't see that the card already cleared it. sorry for any confusion.
