Having trouble finding the DVD-ROM I want (Samsung SD-816 Blk)

hey guys,

I already have my NEC-3500A i'm looking to couple with with a Samsung DVD-ROM. Ok so here is the problem: Originally I was going to get the Samsugn TS-H352A black from Newegg. Well I check Samsungs website and come to find out they have two other models the SD-816 and an SD-616E.
Looks like the one I want is the SD-816 since it boasts impressive specs and features and is better than the TS-H352A or the SD-616E. Problem is I can't find it anywhere. I found it one place but it said they were refurbished and the other places only had beige. I found one place that has it but so many places listed the SD-616E and the SD-816 as the same thing i'll have to call. They are clearly different.

Check out the features page and specs page and notice all the difference. The 816 also pulls audio at 32x.

*Here is the TH-H352A: http://product.samsung.com/cgi...rod_id=TS-H352A%2fMIAH

*Here is the SD-816 (It is listed wrong, it is not a CD R/W writer): http://product.samsung.com/cgi...=&prod_id=SD-816BE

-One other thing, WHAT IS HALF HEIGHT?

I am trying to find one of these though. I was wondering if they were discontinued and not listed as so yet or if they haven't hit the shelves really yet?

Thanks guys,
Rhin0

Starting to wonder if the 616E and the 816 aren't the same. But the specs are different on their website, unless they didn't list them all. It is possible that the 616 is the "half height" version of the 816 but for some reason I don't think so.

Maybe the drive is brand new

That is why I posted though! im sure someone knows

Half-height is the height of a normal 5" optical drive (current 3.5" hard drives are 1/3 height, 1-inch or low profile). Probably most on the ATF are too young to remember "Full Height" 5.25-inch hard drives (or even that there were 5.25" hard drives) that would take up two of today's standard 5" optical drive bays...
. The cases were built heavier then too so they wouldn't move when one of those bad boys cranked up 😉 .

Thanks Zepper. That answers one thing. I know that the SD-816 isn't a full size big monster like you are talking about.

It is important for me to get this drive though, it is a lot better than the 352a or the comparable Sony. This one reads dual layer discs and double sided and it rips digital audio at 32x plus it has other features and technologies others don't.

If I can't find it i'll just wait till I can, I definately want this one.

Personally I would buy a CDRW/DVD ROM Combo drive (e.g. the Samsung SM-352NRNS - this is the retail version that is supposed to have 8MB buffer! - getting scarce too, you may have to dye a beige one black with vinyl dye, etc.) - I can't see spending money on just a player anymore - plus it would take any CD burning chores off the DVD burner... Have you done searches on pricewatch and pricegrabber or shopping.com?

p.s. I think samsung is replasing the SM series with the TH series.

Point taken.

I am still sure I want this one though. Does anyone else have any information on the SD-816? Anyone been able to purchase one?

I still say that the SM-352 will do all that the 816 will and give you a burner as a bonus. With the added advantage that you can actually buy one...

Zepper,

I'll check the specs on that right now, I don't think it has some of the features that the SD-816 has though.
BTW you were right about the SM series it is discontinued by Samsung, saw it on their site the other night.
