Having trouble downloading Firefox plugins

On certain websites, the bar appears above the website saying that Firefox is missing a certain plugin, therefore not allowing everythign to display on the page.

I clicked the bar, and it says it is downloading JAVA, but it takes forever. I disabled my firewall because I thought that may be the problem, but it still does not download Java. Is anyone else having this problem, or is there somethign preventing it from downloading?
