having trouble creating a partition

My friend is trying to reformat his laptop. As you know some laptops come with recovery partition. When he tried to delete the old partition (containing windows xp) and leaving the recovery partition, it says ( C : ) for recovery partition and ( D : ) for the new partition. What does he have to do so that when he creates new partition it recognize as ( C : ) instead of ( D : ).
