Having trouble copying Windows XP CD

I'm trying to copy my Windows XP CD, but I'm having problems with it.

I burned it... cd to cd copy with nero, but it doesn't work correctly. I also tried ripping all the files off the CD and making a data CD with nero. That didn't work either.

What's the problem? CD protection or something?

Ummm... why are you copying the CD?

Sorry, but I have just assumed the worst of people lately :) No offence

I don't think there's any physical protection on the CD, but the slipstreaming/bootable CD guides I've seen are quite specific about setting various ISO attributes, including tags that specify the CD was created by Microsoft. There's a slipstreaming guide for XP using Nero somewhere (don't have the link anymore, sorry) that should tell you exactly how to burn the ISO.

Why? He still needs proper activation codes to use the OS. It's perfectly reasonable to want a backup of important media, and I'd say your OS media is pretty darn important. I'm all for legality and paying for what you get, but IMO some people around here let their halo get the better of them.

It's perfectly legal, let me assure you.

As cleverhandle said, I just want to back up my OS which happens to be very important media.

I've had the CD for a long time, and I would rather scratch up a backup than the original copy.

Try creating an .iso image of XP CD using either Isobuster or Winiso. Then burn the image in Nero (do not just burn it like a data cd. you have to use the "burn image" function).

I dunno, I'm afraid there's something wrong either with the original CD or with your Nero configuration. A plain old CD-to-CD copy using Nero should do the trick. If you use the Wizard it automatically sets up the session to match the characteristics of the original media -- UNLESS your drive isn't fully supported by Nero.

When you say that "it doesn't work correctly" what exactly do you mean? You've tried booting with the copy, and it isn't bootable -- or what?

latest version of CloneCD works very well. No problems...

I've also done the slipstreaming SP1 using Nero with no problems
