Having trouble connecting WLAN on WRT54G. Have to reboot.

Hey guys,

This has proven to be quite an annoyance and I haven't been able to figure out what the issue is. I'm assuming it's the router but it works, I just have trouble connecting to it. Basically what happens:

-Come to this house, can't connect. All the lights look fine on the router/dsl modem.
-Have to keep on power cycling modem/router until just the right combo of lights come on (internet/activity on the modem)
-Have to reboot my Thinkpad T40 otherwise it won't even read the connection.
-It may or may not work and I might have to repeat the whole procedure.

Then today on two seperate occasions of me finally being able to connect, I lose the connection within a minute.

At my other location I have a Linksys WRT54G as well but with cable. I have absolutely no problems connecting there, or at any other wireless access point for that matter.

If I plug my laptop in directly to the DSL modem it works fine. So, I've limited it to the router, any suggestions as to what the issue may be? Perhaps a modded firmware or even an updated firmware?

Thanks in advance!

So, by what you were described, you are losing a WAN address? drop your MTU on your gateway! Good luck! 🙂

The description of your problem is a little fuzzy as far as the details go. So this may or may not be pertinent.

To me it sounds like a problem with wireless authentication or acquisition of an IP address from the DHCP server. Have you double checked the security settings? Does your laptop support the encryption the WRT54G is using? Do the keys match? Does the WRT54G have MAC filtering enabled? Is the laptop not getting an IP (in Windows XP this will say "Limited or no connection").

If the connection appears as "limited" try opening the command prompt (Start > run > type: cmd) and type in ipconfig /renew. I've seen the DHCP server on a lot of WRT54Gs take their good old time and sometimes a ipconfig /renew is necessary.

I could be, not sure. How do I drop my MTU? Thanks.

I have WEP encryption enabled and have no issues with that. This is a recent problem, everything used to be fine. The keys do match. As to the MAC filtering, I'm not sure.

The connection is lost completely. I haven't tried an iprenew yet, good idea. Thanks!

Any other suggestions please let me know.
