Having trouble connecting through wireless connection

I'm very new to wireless connections and setting them up. First off, I have a Wireless Router/modem combo, the Westell VersaLink Gateway, and I just recently purchused a wireless adapter for one of my computers, the D-Link DWL 520+ i believe. I also have Verizon DSL. I installed the software and card and have eveything working. Now when I go to connect to a wireless network, there is one choice to connect to, which would be the router/modem. I click connect and nothing happens, it still says there is one network available to connect to but I can't seem to connect to it. I'm lost at what steps to take or where to begin. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You need to allow your computer to connect to a non secure network would be my guess. Does that modem/router have options like wep, etc. for wireless security? If not, I would be purchasing my own router.
