Having trouble centering desktop on widescreen...

I am running a 7800GT. I am having trouble centering the desktop on my 55" Sony WEGA. To get the entire desktop on the screen (leaving nothing cut off) I have to leave a black area off to the left. I am using the overscan option, where you can move the vertical and horizontal tabs to change the total screen fill.

I have messed with NVKeystone, and that will make the screen fill it entirely, but you have to activate it, which makes the mouse seem slow.

Also, when I switch to lower screen resolutions it will fill the entire TV.

I am using DVI to HDMI. The TV is 1080i.

This is really frustrating,

Thanks

Bump...

Anyone?

This may help describe it a little more. I can't get rid of the black border around that encases the screen. It doesn't lie below the start bar, but is present on the sides and top. Also the desktop isn't quite evenly centered; there is more of a black border on the left side than the right.

I'm not too familiar with this, but it seems to me a bit of tweaking with custom resolutions would resolve your problem. Either try 1080i or find out the native resolution of the display (e.g. something like 1360x768?) and try that.

agreed find out the exact resolution and create it. Should be easy with an Nvidia card.

I found the exact resolution and created it, it said "resolution input invalid." 1366x768.

Actually, as it turns out, the resolution is 1280x720 for the TV, but still no improvement.

Anything to try?

You've got a 720p TV set judging by that native resolution. Sending it a 1080i signal might be what's causing you problems.

I asked around at AV forums and they recommended changing the front porch value.

I tried to change the front porch settings. I clicked apply. Then the screen flickered and came back to the desktop asking if I wanted to keep these settings. I clicked yes, and it reestablished the original front porch value. How do I prevent it from doing this?

Also the TV is 1080i capable.

Also the TV is 1080i capable.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should. What's the exact model of your TV?

Your computer is progressive - your TV is progressive - why would you force them both to work with (ugly, artifacty) interlaced video? I bet if you feed that thing a 720p signal like it wants, your problems will go away in a heartbeat. :p

I used a combination of overscan and powerstrip to configure the desktop center. Seems to fit well now. I'm not sure if there is a better way or not.

Glad you found a way to get it working! :)

My family will be upgrading to one of those bigscreens in the near future, and I dread trying to get the PC resolution usable. It seems like the only displays which have "PC compatibility" listed as a feature are prohibitively expensive.
