My main system running XP home has been unable to visit cbc.ca or simhq.com for the past couple hours. I thought maybe their servers were the reason, but I could ping them in a command prompt window.. so I thought I'd try them on my other PC. I can visit them fine with it. The PCs share a common DSL connection.

I had this happen once before (I couldn't visit the ATI site for example) and I just ended up reformatting my XP machine.... something I don't want to do again!
Things I've done:

Reset IE to default

Downloaded Opera (thought it might be the browser)

Ran spybot S&D

Still no go. I'm thinking something must have changed somehow in my network settings

Any idea what's causing it? I'm getting really irritated at this.

I would first compare DNS settings between the machine that does work, and the one that doesn't. Make sure they use the same DNS servers (ipconfig /all from a command prompt) and if not, change the non-working machine's settings to match the other.

Also, do a search on your machine for a file called 'hosts' I *think* the path should have /Driver/etc/ in it, it's been a while. Make sure that the only entry in that file is localhost for 127.0.0.1.

How do you share the Internet (Router, ICS, Nothing)?

Do you have Software PPPOE installed?

Do you have the same TCP/IP intercept software on both computers (I.e. Firewall. Ad-Buster, Cookies Bloker, Anti-PopUp etc.)?

No sharing, just a common hub.

Well, here is the scoop. I think I have it figured out. I'll try to give the cliffnotes version though as to not bore you all too badly.

Bernse's 1.2Tbird melted down HARD about 4 months ago (quite litterally, a power supply faliure). Took everything with it- EXCEPT:

Network Card
Hard Drive

So... I rebuilt a new system from scratch. I ended up using the old Network card as my ISP said I used up all my MAC addresses... so instead of deleting some of the old MAC addresses and using the onboard LAN I just reused the card.

On a hunch, I just ripped out the network card, deleted an old MAC address with my ISP and registered the one for the onboard LAN on my P4P800 mobo.

It worked.

Who knew?

Thanks for the help.
