Having problems with LONG load times

I recently got a new computer. 3GHZ, Pentium 4, 512MB RAM. And I've run into a problem. It's very random, but sometimes, when I click something, it takes over 2-3 minutes for it to load and the computer makes a weird noise while its loading. Like it's trying to load and it only does this sound when it's trying to load but taking forever. Starting up the computer, once I get to Windows XP, takes about five minutes. I've tried defrag and everything. Anybody got any idea?

what weird noise?
a sort of clicking/whirring means HDD is dying.

check what security suite you have installed. My mcafee Internet Security Suite 2005 prolongs my startup form winxp login screen to finish xp load to about 5 minutes from around 1minute 30s or so.

It's like a clicking noise. I just got the PC though. How could the HD be dieing? Sometimes, when I browse through the C: drive, thats when it starts to load slowly. Maybe thats the reason.

A HD could be dying because of shipping mishandling ( thrown, tossed, hit, etc etc)
could of been a defect when installed. Anything can really go wrong with your pc when its new during shipping. UPS seems to be the worst type of shipping when it come to my experiences.
