Having problems with Creative soundblaster 5.1 digital.

I install this card, and sometimes it works, and other times the sound cracks up real bad? I am at my wits end here. Any help would be great.

Also, I have dumped the drivers, and reinstalled them. Works for awhile, and then it gets bad again???????

When does it start cracking up. I have some problems with my SB128 described here: My Thread

Basically if I start doing something else with my PC while the soundcard is in use (watching a DVD or alt-tab about of a game to desktop and start browsing a drive or doing some surfing) my sound starts to get static/distorted until I have to kill whatever app is using the soundcard and restart it.

Read my thread and see if it's similar.

Do you have WinDVD installed? I just found some info on the Morrowind support forums about WinDVD using a file called IVIAUDO.AX. Apparently Sound Blaster cards use the same file (or different file with the same name). The Morrowind support post said to unregister the WinDVD version of the file so only the Sound Blaster one is used.

I'm at work so I can't look into this possibility right now... but I'll post tomorrow if I can figure it out.

Found some more info:

I'm going to try this tonight if I have these either of these two files (I'm not sure if all SB cards use these files).

regsvr32 /u c:\[some path]\iviaudio.ax
regsvr32 /u c:\[some path]\mmswitch.ax

Apparently these files don't have to be registered for WinDVD, your Sound Blaster, or ANY applications that uses them to work properly - but if you do have more than one program trying to use them they cause sound distortion.

Hopefully this fixes my problem... hopefully it fixes yours too.

Well... I tried unloading those files from the registry but it didn't work. *shrug*

I'm starting to think this is either a 3D sound problem or somehow related to my video card because I don't have any problems when playing songs in Winamp. Only when I'm watching a video or playing a game does my sound start to get distorted.

Blah!

My SBLive likes to grab a different IRQ and DMA on every boot. On occasion, I will try to share with my MPEG card, and the conflict result in some nasty sounds. Try turning off DOS emulation.
