Having problems with a laptop

EDIT: Thanks Freshfish...I'm a moron. I'll try and clear this up a bit.

Recently my friend formatted his HD on his Hitachi MX-133. When he rebooted after the format the laptop POSTS, but gives a "non system disk error" after the POST. It gives this error if the CD-ROM drive is in, if the 3.5 drive is in and if nothing at all is in the drive bay slot. Why is he getting this error?

Thanks!

It's not giving you an error it is telling you what's what. Formatting wiped out the system so it is not to be found. Put a bootable disk in the CD drive or a bootable disk in the floppy drive and load a new operating system.
