Having problems with a few video files

I'm trying to play some TV shows that I got from a P2P program, and all it plays is a set of colored bands without any sound. There's a large red band that runs across the bottom of the screen, and a set of vertical ands that runs across the top of the screen. I doubt this would help, but going from left to right, the colors are white, olive, cyan, green, violet, red, blue and black.

Does this mean I got a bad file, or that I'm missing the correct codec to play this file? I thought it was a bad file the first few times it happened, but it's happened at least a dozen times now and I wonder whether it's possible to get this many bad files. I used GSpot and it said that I have 2 compatible codecs for this MJPG/XVID file. I'm wondering if there's a possibility that it's trying to use the wrong codec or incorrectly identifying the file type for these videos. I installed Defiler Pak 1.19 as my source of codecs.

maybe it's just the beginning of the show,, like they put that there,.. Also just dl the K lite codec pack. and u should be set... and if u can get warez, dl Zoomplayer, haven't had anytrouble with that and very good custom settings.

It's not just the beginning. I've skipped through various parts of the shows, and it's the same way through the whole thing of each one. I'd prefer not to "just" d/l the K-lite codec pack because I don't want to install unnecessary software, especially codecs. These packs are notorious for having lots of extraneous junk... I want to fix my problem, not add to it. I already have the Defiler pak installed, and this is already supposed to have a pretty good set of codecs. Is there anybody out there who has had the same problem before with their video files?
