having problems with 8rda+

i just replaced me ecs k7s5a with this mobo. the problem is windows xp wont load. i get past the part where it checks ur ram, cd rom, etc. then it stops and it says someting like this:

windows xp was unable to start because of a hardware or software change.

then it gives me a selection to choose which mode to start up:

safe mode
safe mode with networking
some other safe mode, cant remember

last known working configuration

normal startup


i tried each option and all of them take me back to this point. any help would be appreciated

Just re-install the OS. It doesn't like MB changes as it confuses the HAL.
 
But there is a way to migrate your old installation to the new one. But it's a major production, and can take several days, as well as requiring a large backup mechanism, either tape or an extra hard drive.

I didn't say to format and start fresh.

You can do a re-install keeping all of your installed apps. It does however require you to re-install all winXP service packs and security updates.

Just put the cd in the drive and boot from it. Go through the normal install procedure without altering anything. When it asks you to repair or install fresh, choose repair. It will then re-install the OS.
 
That is correct, but Microsoft claims that it only applies when the HAL is the same. I've seen several cases where this has resulted in an unbootable system that can not be recovered when the HAL IS different. The Microsoft approved way is to do a specific type of backup, install a fresh copy of XP on the new hardware, and then do a very specific set of steps to restore your prior installation to the new XP installation/HAL. I've had this work, in the cases where the recovery had failed. Thank goodness I backup a client's drive using ghost before I ever do any work on a system.
 
It's a good idea to prepare yourself for a reinstall when upgrading a mobo. You should be able to install it over the top of itself w/o any major issues--though of course, there aren't any garuntees.
 
ya, i had to reinstall my OS. but, i went from xp pro to xp home. couldnt find pro disc 🙁
so, most of my programs dont work no more. anyway to fix this other than re-installing every program?
