I just got a board for the CPU, the Soyo SY-K7VTA. Upon inserting my CPU (which has been taken extremely good care of) the proper way, then applying the Taisol 742 HSF. I powered up my machine. The Soyo "voice doctor" immediately replied, "The processor is damaged or installed improperly". I know it is installed properly, the manual was read throughly, and all settings have been set, which actually was only one non related CPU issue. Anyone else have any hints or advice? This will really piss me off if the processor is damaged. On the CPU there were 4 little rubber type pads. I left those on, and have the fan installed on top of that. The fan was a bit%^ to get clipped on, but I finally got it on.

The DIMM im using has Hyundai chipset, These DIMMS worked on my other system which was a Celeron 633@950, Abit BH-6. Could it be a compatibility issue with the DIMMS? The dimms ARE PC100. The confusing part is that the mobo voice doctor said CPU......god this sucks....I hate flip chips, go back to slots dammit.

tell me you didn't hear a crunch when you put the heatsink/fan on... if you think you even might have heard a noise somewhat close to that... take the HS/F off and inspect the top of the chip carefully.... also did you remove the little piece of plastic over the thermal pad?

I really didnt hear a crunch at all. Why would they make the god blasted fan so tight to put on? Was I supposed to scrape off those little rubber pads at the four corners of the CPU? I definitely removed the plastic piece above the thermal pad, I removed the HSF once already, but the thermal pad material was already somewhat stuck onto the chip, should I scrape that off? Or will I damage the chip?

You have to keep those black feet on. They prevent the heatsink from rocking on the cpu. Check to make sure the cpu isn't chipped. Thats probably about all you can do.

Cool, cause I didnt take off the feet at all. I guess ill have to scrape some of the thermal pad away from the chip to see if there are any cracks or hairline fractures.

I havn't used this mobo but if the voice diagnostic syas the cpu is bad, I would tend to believe it. POST functions run out of the BIOS not main memory so the mobo should be able to tell the difference.
