Having locks and delays while playing videos

Hi there,

Some days ago my computer started to behave strangely when playing videos, especially high-res DivX full motion video. Sometimes it slows down and delays the playback, or even locks for a few seconds before resuming normal playback. It's behaving as if the CPU is too busy or not powerful enough to play the videos smoothly, but that's not the case when you have a Pentium Dual-Core CPU at 3.85 GHz and with no apps running on the background. I've already tried to reinstall all video and audio drivers, even formated my pc and reinstalled everything from the ground up, but the problem stays on.

Strangest thing is that when I playback DivX videos from my DVD drive, this doesn't happen, it only happens when reading from hard disk. However, my HDD doesn't seem to have any problem (bad sectors, etc) and performs just fine in all hdd benchmarks.

What could be wrong? Any undetected failure in my hard disk? Any misconfiguration? My HDD is a Maxtor DiamondMax 10 300 Gb SATA-150, my motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-8I94P-G, with Intel 945P Chipset. My video card is a vanilla Nvidia Geforce 6800 PCI-E.

What if you burn one of the videos you are having problems with to a DVD then play it from the DVD drive? Or have you already done that? Just want to see if we could iliminate that specific video file or files as the issue. Maybe try updating Divx? When you say some days ago, how many? Like 6 months ago? When you originally started having the problem did you try a system restore and if you did, did it fix it for a while or did the issue continue to happen after the restore?

You could try uninstalling Divx and installing xvid.
