Hi all,

First off, I am new to the site and apologize in advance if this problem has been brought up in another thread.

I have a question/problem regarding my laptop and the external monitor I am using that has arisen recently (approximately 1 week). Before getting to the question/problem, here are each specs.

Laptop Information:
Brand: HP
Model: Spectre
Processor: Intel(R) Core TM i-7-10510U CPU @ 1.80GHz 230 GHz
Installed RAM: 16.0 GB (15.7 GB usable)
Operating System: Windows 11 Home
Operating System Version: 22H2
Monitor Display Resolution: 3840x2160

Monitor Information:
Brand: Acer
Model: R240HY bidx
Display Size: 23.8 inches
Display Resolution: 1920x1080

Problem:
Recently, I noticed that the external monitor's screen, when hooked up to my laptop, would go in and out (i.e., switching from a black screen to the display) randomly. However, the monitor is not turning off when doing this but continues to run. Also, as noted, this problem is random.

Solutions Attempted Thus Far:
  • Using different HDMI cables to connect the computer. There was no change in the issue with the HDMI cables being used.
  • Attempting to update all of the display drivers. All of my display drivers were up to date.
  • Uninstalling the display drivers and restarting my computer. There was no change in the issue after doing this.
  • Editing the power plan to “never” turning off or going to sleep when plugged in. Also, under the advanced power settings, making sure to turn off the “link state power management” under the PCI express. There was no change in the issue after doing this.
  • Changing the refresh rate of my laptop to monitor to match (60 Hz to 60 Hz) and then to offset (60 Hz to 59.94 Hz). Neither of these settings changed anything regarding the monitor going in and out.
  • Changing display resolutions of my laptop to match my monitor (1920x1080). There was no change in the issue after doing this.
Other Things I Tried:
  • Hooking my laptop up to a different monitors to see if the problem was my laptop. With one of the monitors (a 65-inch 4K television), there was no issue. However, with another monitor (a ten-year old 24-inch Insignia 720p television) there was the issue of the screen going in and out.
  • Hooking my monitor up to another laptop. When doing this, there was no issue with the monitor going in and out.

Based on these issues, I don’t think that there is a problem with the hardware (e.g., the functionality of the monitors, HDMI cables, HDMI cable laptop ports) but there does seem to be an issue with my laptop and specific monitors, only an issue when my laptop is hooked up to specific monitors..

I wanted to know if anyone had similar problems and what they did to solve the issue.

Thank you.

Hi Leea. Thank you very much for your reply.

I tried this strategy earlier, and it didn't help with the monitor I'm using above. I got another monitor about a week ago, and the problems seem to stop until today when there has been flickering on the screen (it isn't severe as before). I notice that the screen begins to flicker when my laptop's fan comes on. I'm beginning to think it has to do with the power connection to my HDMI port on my laptop or simply a problem with HDMI port itself.

Thank you again. I appreciate your response.

Have you fixed the problem? Is that really a power problem? Or HDMI port problem?

I too had a similar issue. However, I never found any solution and dropped the external monitor.

The other monitor seemed to work fine for a bit, but the same problem started again but not to the extent it was happening before. I ended up purchasing a USB-C hub with an HDMI adapter. It came in the mail last night, and so far, it seems to be working well.
