Having Elsa Gladiac GeforceII installation problems

I used to have a Geforce II GTS about six weeks ago. It worked fairly well (extremely well if you consider how new it was for its time).

I then switched to a Radeon and I was unbelievably disappointed. I got rid of it and now I have a Elsa Geforce II GTS again. Unfortunately, this time around I'm not having as much success.

Starting with a fresh install of windows on a new harddisk, I have one problem so far that it is quite annoying. I can't get my Geforce II GTS out of 640*480. I have an XGA data projector that can handle essentially any input. When I try to change to 1024*768 and press apply, my computer changes it back to 640*480 and asks me "Do you want to keep these settings?" eventhough it hasn't changed anything.

Has anyone else seen this problem? Any suggestions?

Here was my install sequence:

Starting from a freshly formatted harddisk, I did the following:

1. Installed windows. (non-SE)
2. Installed Linksys ethernet card.
3. Updated windows service pack 2
4. Updated windows explorer 5.5
5. Updated with windows critical updates
6. Flashed my bios on my Elsa card (version 1013, I think.)
7. Installed D3 drivers version 618

At this point I was now using the nvidia driver and my problem started. I could change the color dept but not the resolution.

8. I then read the readme file for the Elsa drivers I downloaded but hadn't installed. They said I need to install directx 7.0A before installing their drivers. (The D3 Readme didn't mention this at all. It was very brief) So I installed DirectX 7.0a

Problem still existed.

9. Installed the newest Elsa drivers.

Problem still exists.

Was the action of not installing directX 7.0a a fatal mistake? I am going to have to do another reformat. Anyone else seen this problem or have advice?

Here is my system with the installed components so far:

1. Athalon 700MHz
2. FIC SD11 AMD751 north/ Via 686 south.
3. 192 MB PC100 RAM
4. Linksys Ethernet card.
5. Elsa Gladiac 32MB
6. Windows 98 (non SE if it makes a difference)

Any info would be very helpful.

welcome to the nvidia driver shuffle. Assuming you have the latest 4-in-1's installed:

unless you've got lots of stuff loaded on your windows system, I'd wipe clean and start over. install the basic drivers that came with your Elsa (the most problematic GTS thus far, from what I've seen), and then DX7. Play around with some games and see how compatibility/stability is. Again, make sure the latest 4-in-1's are installed (probably your problem). The video drivers will probably be based on the Detonator 2 drivers (5xx series)

After it seems all is well, "upgrade" to the 6.18 or 6.26 drivers. The 6.18 are *supposedly* suported drivers, but they have been pretty buggy for many people, apparently. 6.26 may be the ticket for you.

Good luck (you're gonna need it - GTS's typically don't like Athlon mobo's)

Very Weird!!

When I went to reinstall my Elsa drivers, as soon as I UNINSTALLED it my screen went to 1024*768! It then told me that I would have to restart for the uninstallation to take effect. So, I restarted Plug and Play came up in 640*480 asked me to insert my Gladiac Drivers disk and I now have no problems with my desktop. Haven't tried any games yet. Keep you posted.

BTW, what version of the D3s is the most stable 618, 626, or what?

LOL....with nvidia, it's a roll of the dice. Standard answer to "which GeForce drivers are best" is "try them on your system and see"
