Is it as bad as the Mianstream news is making it out to be?

Electric Company said the generators tripped off as a saftey precaution and they just had to re-start the system slowly.

True. 2 of Oahu's 13 generators were knocked out by the actual earthquake. the rest of the grid was shut off because load balancing failed or something similar.
