Having difficulties installing new hard drive in PS3

So I swapped out the hard drive in my PS3 to a 160GB. I had read some guides and they all said the PS3 would come up with a option to format the drive...well...it didn't. It's asking for a system update version 2.3 or higher. I have tried this on both a CD-R, a mp3 player(acting as a flash drive) and a SD memory card. It doesn't recognize the update on any of these drives. I am putting the update in the correct PS3\UPDATE\xxxx location.

Any ideas?

Seems to me like a difference between the 20/80/60 and the 40. The 40 even has a different hard drive slot!

I'm lost though.

Did I need to run the backup software on the PS3 before I removed the hard drive? I just backed up the files I wanted via individual file transfer.

Can't you put the original HD in there, do the update it wants, and then try to install the new HD?

I could if one of the screws wasn't stripped....:mad;

EDIT: I'm downloading the 2.35 file now...we'll see if it likes that one.

Bastards....it was expecting the 2.35 patch which I didn't even know was out....

Who woulda guessed that the day I decide to change the hard drive out is the day they release a patch....

::sigh:: good news though...it recognized the update and formatted :)
