Having contrast and brightness problems lcd

so I have trouble figuring out what my contrast and brightness settings should be. My old monitor was old and dying so everything was simply cranked.

Where abouts should I be setting these for best viewing?
 
Try some of the software from this site. The old Nokia program and the TFT program are both good, but there are many others that you could try. With the LCD's I've used, I find that just lowering the gamma setting in the videocard settings usually can get a good picture without doing much else.
