Having audio issues with games

So I checked out the audio troubleshooting for Vista and didnt see this. Anyways, trying to run any of the HL2 games, HL2 Episode 1 or 2, and Team Fortress 2 the engine only sees 2 speakers, even if I change it to 5.1 speakers, which I have, it will then change it right back to 2 speakers as soon as I close the audio menu out.

I'm running Vista Home Premium with a Gigabyte P35-DS4 Rev 2 board. I'm using the onboard Realtek audio. Is there something I'm missing that I cant get 5.1 sound. I mean Vista detects my 5.1 speakers and even doing manual test of each speaker shows they are working. And playing music and whatnot is in 5.1 So what gives?

Any help would be welcome.

Sounds like a bug somewhere. I've got pretty much the same configuration and havent had any problems, and it looks like youre doing everything properly.

My first suggestion would be to update audio drivers.
