Having an SSD-buying impulse

Hi all,

I'm contemplating replacing my current Kingston 128GB SSD (an early-gen drive with JMicron controller that doesn't even support TRIM) to an Intel 510 120GB SSD. I have SATA3 port on my motherboard to take advantage of. The Kingston SSD will then replace the 5400rpm HDD in my newly purchased C50-powered netbook (hopefully no fit issue).

What do you guys think? Thanks.

sounds like a plan to me. would this be in a desktop with mechanical hard drives as well? I assume so, as 120 GB isn't much space. Good for a boot drive though 😀

I was able to stave off a similar SSD craving by just offloading all my game installs to a recently purchased 1TB Samsung F3. Its working well and now that my 60Gb Agility is not filled to the max, my system runs much better (Does TRIM require a certain amount of free disk space?).

is the Samsung f3 sata 3? If not, may want to consider the sata 3 version of the 1TB WD caviar black.

Not sure about the trim question, is that a agility 1 or 2? I am thinking perhaps the earlier versions didnt support trim, though not sure :/

The agility 1 TRIMs I just don't know how it works really, like defragging your platters requires 15% freespace, remember?

The F3 is a sata3 drive, and the combination is working great, especially since it only cost me $50.

I ordered the Crucial M4 128GB to replace the old Kingston SSD. The SATA3 ports on my motherboard are JMicron however.

I have heard people recommending the SATA2 Intel ports over the JMicron ones. What are the reasons? Which port should I use for the M4? The Kingston SSD (SATA2) is currently attached to the Intel port because I see no point in foregoing the Intel port at this interface speed.

Thanks.

Keep the SSD on the intel port because it can offer higher throughput, and better I/Os than any of the on-board aftermarket controllers. Usually those are made by Marvell.

Apparently I had connected all my drives to the Marvell ports. I realised this only after installing Windows. I'm not encountering any issues thus far but I'm going to anyway move the drives to the Intel ports for reasons stated previously, to eliminate the possibility of no TRIM on the Marvell ports and to have full 16x PCI-e speed (down to 8x with Marvell ports enabled).

Question: should I re-install Windows if I move from the Marvell to Intel port?

Thanks.

Just be sure you are running the MSAHCI drivers before moving the drives over and you will be fine.

If you have the Marvell drivers installed just delete them first and Windows will reboot and revert back to it's default drivers for proper boot on the Intel ports when the drives are moved over there.

I have only installed the Intel INF and AMD Catalyst drivers so far. Everything else is as how the Win7 installation left things to be. Assuming that this installation is using the MSAHCI driver (can I verify this from Device Manager?), is it as simple as physically moving the plugs to the Intel ports?

Thanks.
