So I'm planning on dual booting my new laptop with XP/Kubuntu. I used Partition Magic to repartition my HDD (didn't wanna lose data) and set up a 1.2GB Linux Swap, 5 GB Linux Ext3, 40 GB NTFS for Windows, and 10 GB FAT32 Recovery Partition (which I'll probably end up wiping out once I make some restore CDs).

So I boot up the Kubuntu CD, it boots into the live-off-the-disc setup, I start the installer, just skip over the manual partitioning (since my drive is already partitioned) and get to the mounting set up. hda1/hda2 are reported as my Windows NTFS and Recovery partition so I'm leaving those mounted at /media/hda2 and /media/hda2. I set my 5 GB ext3 to / and my 1.2 GB swap to swap. I hit next and bam, "No root filesystem." I'm confused. This should be incredibly simple, and I'm not sure why it isn't?

SS of the partition setup in PM

It would probably be more useful to take a screenshot of the mounting setup. You should be able to do that within the liveCD and post it to the net. From what you described, it sounds correct, but I have only done the Ubuntu install once and I didn't dual-boot so I'm not specifically familiar with it.

By the way, the partitioner in the liveCD will let you resize NTFS volumes.

Do this :
/boot ( 120 mb ) [ext3]
/ (3,5gb for system ) [ext3]
/home (1,5 Gb for your docs ) [ext3]
/SWAP ( 1,2 GB that you already done ) [swap]

Install from text, it's better, some times the "Hot Mount" on the Ubuntu doesn't fucntion properly because he cannot remount properly the file system under certain controllers,

Success for you, we all will help.

Apparently it's a bug in the installer. I just scrubbed the partition, remade it with the actual installer, and then it worked. Thanks for the help! Now to get the broadcom wireless to work!

search wiki.ubuntu.com for broadcom and you'll find a good guide on how to extract the broadcom firmware and get your wireless to work.

Just wanted to, again, say thanks for all the help, I've now got my brand new compaq presario V5305VM running dual booting kubuntu, with the wireless working perfectly, and xgl and beryl installed as well .. it's pretty damned sexy. Now it's time to replace KDE with Enlightenment ftw.
