Having a problem in WinXP in a novell environment

I have a problem and it is only on XP machines. I have some data files which are just tab delimited text. When I try to open this file from a mapped novell drive it comes back with an error that the file is read only
here is the exact error

s6 cannot be accessed. The file may be read-only, or you may be trying to access it a read-only location, or, the server the document is stored on may not be responding

None of this is true and it works fine from 9x or 2000 machines.
Anyone seen this before.
