Haven't built a PC in a while, so here goes with gaming build

Hi All,

I'm considering a gaming PC build for the first time in years, so here goes:

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.

Playing games. Skyrim, multiple EVE Online accounts, possibly other games.

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread

No set budget yet, but looking at higher end parts.

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.

US

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.

I'm Intel/nVidia, which helps given that I have employee pricing access to both of these.

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.

Existing case (some '08 era Coolermaster), monitor (30" Dell, and might eventually upgrade this to a 27" Apple Cinema display)

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.

I've been looking, but nothing quite exact.

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.

Default speeds.

8. What resolution YOU plan on gaming with.

As high as possible, hopefully 2560x1600 or 1440

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?

Before November, for Skyrim.

10. Don't ask for a build configuration critique or rating if you are thin skinned.

Bring it! (but this is the first thread like this I've done, so if you bring it, bring lube please)

OK... So I'm thinking along the lines of:

i7 2600K + intel SSD (I can get an employee price bundle on this)
nVidia GTX590, or SLI something else? (not sure here, certainly open to suggestion. my concern is that it doesn't sound like a jet engine, and may possibly run two monitors on this from time to time)
Asus Maximus IV Extreme-Z (overkill?) Looking at Z68 chipset.
16GB or 32GB of the fastest memory the mobo will support
PSU: Some name brand in the 1000 watt range that has modular connectors
a 1 or 2TB drive (don't need a whole lot of storage on this machine)

Given that I already have the case, I'm guessing this is about it. I can buy this stuff via newegg or via some local retailer, whatever.

Budget isn't set yet, but it sounds like this is going to be expensive.

I guess another concern would be if there are any radical new techs coming out soon that will render this hopelessly obsolete very soon...

Yup, but it doesn't have to be that expensive.
Reconsider the i7, for gaming you will never notice the diffrence between it an an i5-2500k.
A $360 MB is definitely overkill. If you don't go with SLI this ASRock Z68 PRO3 will do just as well, for $120.
With Sandybridge the speed of memory is no longer very important, and you don't need 32GB, just get something like the G.SKILL Value Series and be done with it. If you really want 16GB, then get two of them.
You don't need a 1000watt PSU, but I'm not that up on PSUs so I'll let others give a recomendation.
The HD you want is the SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3. You simply can't go wrong with that drive.

There are always radical new techs coming out soon. Right now we are waiting on AMD’s Bulldozer chips and the next generation of Radeons. As soon as they come out we will be just a short time away from the next gen of Nvidia’s best thing ever, and that will take us right to the new Intel chips…two years later you are still looking at the next best thing right around the corner.

OK, so you really have one fundamental decision to make here. What is more important, (a) quiet or (b) being able to play games at 2560x1600 with acceptable details and framerates? Let me know, and I will do a build.

This guy is going ALL out! LET IT RIP MAN!

LOL!

At some point between now and when I actually do this reality will set in and I'll shoot myself in the face before I actually buy a $700+ video card and a $350+ mobo and $200 power supply. And then I'll get more realistic about the parts I'm going to buy.

No SLI = cheaper mobo
Step down from high end on video = lots cheaper.

My problem is that I tend to impulse buy when I decide I want something. :)

I already have a 2010 27" iMac for quiet; the new PC will pretty much only be used for gaming. Still, I don't want it to keep all neighbors within a 1/4 mile radius up at night.
