Have you used a PC to phone program, what was it and was it any good?

Like the title says....I'm looking for a program so I don't have to buy those stupid cards at the store.

How much do you usually pay for those store cards (how much $ gets you how many minutes?)

What is their connection fee, if they have one?

Which countries do you usually call?

If you want to do this a lot, I have some hardware that may help you out. You can go to www.ezfone.com to check out more information on it. Let me know if you're interested. They work really well, by the way. Used them for about 2 years while my girlfriend was away at school. It's just like internet phone stuff, but you can use your regular telephone to do it.

wow nosy aren't we? j/k

You can buy them for $5, $10, $15, $20 which give you varying amounts depending on the card. For instance I've seen on a $20 anywhere from 100 minutes to 528 minutes to Spain. Connection fees also vary from 0 to $1.50 for each call placed. I've looked at dialpad and net-to-phone since posting and they seem to be more expensive than just getting some of the cheaper cards. I found one place that will sell a $20 card for $19.50 and it gives you 528 minutes to Spain. The connection fee is $.99. I just ordered it and should be getting it within a half-hour by email.

Thanks for the info pulse8. My wife will only be in Spain for a couple more weeks so it probably doesn't make sense to buy that. What is the price if you don't mind my asking?

I think they started selling them for $150 for 2 of them. I'd be selling it for about $100 for the two.

True but how are you supposed to help someone without knowing all the nitty gritty?

First of all I have yet to find a PC to phone program which offers as clear call quality and the convenience of phone-to-phone as these pre-paid calling cards you find littering gas stations and mini-marts. For the past few years I have been nothing but pleased with (get ready I'm about to forever change your life) BigZoo.com.

I like them because:
1) There is no card it's just an 888 access number and your PIN (which never changes).
2) Your PIN is super easy to remember it's your home phone xxx-xxx-xxxx plus four digits they assign you.
3) NO CONNECTION FEES! (unless you're calling from a payphone - then it's 55 cents I think)
4) The rates are very low and competitive for domestic and international long distance.
5) Call quality to Spain is decent at least to Madrid and Barcelona which are the only two cities in Spain I have called.
6) You can recharge your PIN online instantly at bigzoo.com in either $10, $20 or $50 increments and assuming your credit card is legit you'll be credited the extra minutes instantly.
7) I'd suggest starting out with $10 to see how you like it.
8) I love their online billing statement it shows details of all my outbound calls with all sorts of stats for the past four months including the present month.

When you consider there is NO CONNECTION FEE then they are comparable, your store bought pre-paid cards may offer more minutes but in the long run I'd have to say that BigZoo.com offers a more compelling package and overall value.

Here's a good long distance thread found in the Ferengi forum.

WTF am I doing in banking? I should be a car salesman with slick hair and a fake Rolex!

I believe I have tried net 2 phone or something of that sort and quality was well... not on par with the telephone yet. Words would be clipped once in a while and there is a "lag" so to speak. I'm on dsl and both me and party I was calling had the audio problems. It's not horrible so that you cant use it but could be better.. not sure if the hardware version is any better.

Hate to burst your bubble RossMAN but...let's do some math shall we?

Bigzoo to Spain = $.125 per minute

My calling card to Spain = $.036 per minute with .99 connect fee

My $20 gives me @ Bigzoo = $20/$.125 per minute = 160 minutes

My $20 phone card gives me $19.01/$.036 per minute = 528 minutes for one call
My $20 phone card gives me $18.02/$.036 per minute = 500 minutes for two calls
My $20 phone card gives me $17.03/$.036 per minute = 473 minutes for three calls
My $20 phone card gives me $16.04/$.036 per minute = 445 minutes for four calls
My $20 phone card gives me $15.05/$.036 per minute = 418 minutes for five calls
My $20 phone card gives me $14.06/$.036 per minute = 390 minutes for six calls (that's 65 min. per call)

Unless there are other fees I'm missing it would probably take many 10 minute calls for bigzoo to make sense for me. Thanks for da help though. Plus the $20 card was only $19.50.

I've been using dialpad for quite a while now for all of my long distance. It's darned close to phone quality. I've been told that it's about the same as being on a cell phone. I have received calls from friends using this on dial-up, and it is completely unbearable. Cable seems to do well, though. If you would like, PM me with your number, and I'll call you so you can get an idea of the quality.

Nitzylpick - I realize your phonecards give you an immediate lower per minute rate but I still insist that BigZoo is still an overall great value. I just hate connection charges. Best of luck to you though.
