an oft repeated poll. as i explained in the neutrality thread, i haven't had a landline in about 5 years. don't even have voip service. i can't even see myself getting one until there is transparency for me as a user between using my handset on cellular service and using it for the voip over wifi or bluetooth. we're talking same phone number, ringing the same handset, and costing me less when i'm at home. only other reason i might want a voip service is for international calls.

what about you guys?

the only people i know who are under 30 and have a land line (or voip) are people who cant get good cell phone reception at home

people my parents age (50+) who i know can't seem to even think about giving up a landline

I was just considering getting rid of my landline, the only person I talk to on it is my Mother.

I only have a cell phone -- though if I could afford it I'd get a landline since reception at my place is terrible. guess it's the lead paint on the walls?

No, because cellular phones never work when you need them or want them to.

I love land lines.

Nope, but I have sworn off cell phones although my wife insists on having one for herself.

Exactly. If cellular ever becomes as dependable as POTS then I might consider turning off my landline.

I'm personally still a huge fan of PSTN, mainly because of power-related issues and uptime guarantees. That said, because of calling plans, I'd rather use VOIP or cellular any day.

I personally have a cell phone + a land line (for data) + a land line (for voice).

Don't own a cell phone, just have a land line.

I don't want to be at other people's beck and call.

whats the point of paying an additional $20 for a line that only gets telemarketer calls?

If I'm paying for it? Probably. Cell phones these days can do everything a land line can (AFA making calls goes). I've not had a land line in 4 years and don't miss it.

Hmm. Let see I pay Verizon $49.95 per month for the POTS line to my house. That includes any long distance calls I make to any place in the USA or Canada 365 days a year 24 hours a day, no watching minutes or anything else.

There is no cell phone plan that comes close to that.

my home alarm system needs a land line to dial out..which is the only reason we have one...

not sure how much it would be to upgrade my alarm system so that it has a cellular backup instead...since we are paying $30 a month for our landline, it would pay itself off eventually...
