we tested this one at work, it is nice

you can pay ~$500 for a snap server appliance, but there isn't much difference

Only con of Linksys is they force you to reformat the drive with their device. So if you have a drive with data on it already, kiss it goodbye.

it's reduced to around 76 bucks on buy.com now, but i think i read that once you format it, it's formatted in linux, and windows can no longer see the drive... as in even if you want to convert it back and use it inside your windows XP machine?

Supposedly the box works with SMB, for Windows File Sharing.

Yeah, the box works with it. If the box dies, you can't retrieve your data without getting a replacement.
