I have actually started a project like this recentyl. It will take me years, but whan its "done" it should have everything linked up and BIO and things like that, as well as family tree(s). I've got a lot to do, need to get information from my grandparents and such. So far the collection stands at 1.7 GB, its a few hundred photos, and I havent done anything as far as removing excess and resizing them.

So far I am just at the really OLD ones, I want to get them preserved while its still possible. Most of the people I have never even heard of. I

Example: http://www.tylerk.net/projects/Family/1.jpg

So far i have just been scanning the full page, and then typing any info on the page, its going to take forever, but its easy to just scan and scan and scan, and then edit later. I've dont good scanning while watching movies/tv.

It would be too much work. That's why the first thing I'm doing is buying a nice camera when I become a parent and I'll probably purchase a hard drive solely for that purpose.

Damned good idea. I shot a pile of them at my aunt's recently while we were there for my uncle's funeral. Just propped the pictures up under a decent light, set the white balance, and shot 'em with my DC. Not ideal, but it went quickly and the quality was very good. Here I am 45 years ago! I PhotoChopped all of them, and they look better than the originals by far!

One thing you will want to do, is get the dates, people and locations listed to the best of everyone's recollection. I don't have that at the moment, and it sucks!

Scanner I have sucks... I've contemplated setting up a station to shoot the pictures w/ my digital rebel and do it that way. It will probably come out better :p I just need to work on lighting.

Check out an Epson CX5400 really solid all-in-one and I think we paid ~$90 with tax. The scanner is great and the printer and copier is nice to have as well. Check it on OutPost, I think we got our's at Fry's.

I want to, but I don't have a scanner right now. All of my pics are now taken with a digital camera and backed up every month or so. They're split into years, and then whichever day I dumped the pics from the camera. I have 1500 pics in the last 5 years since starting with digital.

I'm still thinking of a way to secure my backed up pictures, whether it's offsite or in a fire resistant safe.

Yeah, that what I do too. I take pics of everything. Had my first digi for just over a year now, and just my random stuff (sorted by dake and year) is 2.5 GB and 3k pics.
