Just curious... Of course in theory warez ftp's are really illegal, but have you ever known anyone to actually get busted for hosting one? Or have you ever heard anything about a person getting in trouble...

Mods, please don't lock this, it is a very serious question

I knew a lot of people that hosted FTP's at college before Firewall security was a necessary thing. Everyone had their own IP and everything was wide open. I do know some people got in trouble by the college because they were eating up 50-75% of the college's T3 at one point. He limited the number of users on his site and the college was happy. That's about all I have ever come accross.

<< Tauren, do you have any idea what penalties were inforced? >>

I think both of them shut down when told to. I know Happy Hippo went to court because they were argueing that they only provided links and didn't actually host the apps themselves. They lost and had to alter what they were doing. Now they suck.

Happy Hippo used to be pretty good. KopyKatz was pretty good, too, but I think they must have gotten fearful...they seem to have some deal with HH now...but both suck now.

When my brother attended the University of Illinois he was caught running an mp3 server which hosted about 1800 mp3s. He held a record for network abuse and I believe his bandwidth use was up to 18GB/day when he was caught. I don't know if this would be considered alot by today's standards but this was about 4 years ago and this was from nothing more than a dorm room. Probably a record for that school to this day as they now limit each student or connection to 500MB a day. I believe legal threats were made, mainly notifying him that prosecution was an option.

actually, there have been a number of cases and warez convictions; microshaft and others started playing hardball. most just get shut down though without prosecution.

Yes, I know someone who was busted (or nearly) after hacking MIT and using their servers for a warez site. He was being monitored by the NSA and stuff like that.
