Hey All...

So I am chugging along with my rig, playing games, where all of sudden, in the past week or so, my computer starts freezing/locking up during gameplay (not in normal windows, just games). I initially thought it would be heat related, but dismissed that as I have 6 case fans cooling right around there. It crapped out again last night, so I take a quick look down there and find that the Fan/Heatsink on my Sapphire ATI Radeon 9700Pro is not spinning at all??????

I am in the process of RMA'ing it right now, but have you guys ever hear of that, or what could cause this outside of this being chalked up to the fan "going on the fritz" after 4 months of use?

is it safe to assume that once I receive a replacement (RMA), that I will go through this again in a few months?

no, it is highly unlikely that it will happen again

You shouldn't. Like all things, some hardware breaks while in warranty, and identical parts function for years without effort.

I've had numerous fans with varying experiences from lasting about 4 weeks for my GF3 Ti200 to lasting about 5 years now for my P/200 CPU Fan.

The reason why I asked is that I went to a couple of other ATI only forums (rage3d.com, sapphiretech.com), and the stock fan/heatsink appear to fail/cause problems/overheat/stutter/create artifacts, etc, etc.

Now, I am seriously confused on which video card I can trust..... argh!!!!!!!!

It can happen on any card and any brand where there`s a fan, just like you can get a good or faulty motherboard(pot luck as they say)remember RMA does not care which card it is ;).

even if the fan breaks after warranty you shouldnt have much difficulty replacing it - aslong as you can find a suitable one, though i wouldnt be surpsised if the manuf is happy to just send you a new one (perhaps at a nominal charge). at worst you just whack a new heatsink on aswell like i did for my gf3ti200 (pic), though i did that to overclock it quite a lot :D
