Have you guys ever monitored/logged what websites your roommates visit?

These days, it seems like if your name is on the account, you're responsible for the internet activity that occurs on that line regardless if your computer downloaded the offending content or not. So have you ever monitored and/or logged what websites your roommates visit?

I let my first roommate in college use my computer because his sucked.

I checked the history, and he had been surfing fashion websites and gay pron. :frown:

He later moved into another dorm with his "friend" down the hall.

Since your name is on the account, it is probably a good idea to monitor what is going on or restrict stuff like file-sharing. However, you can probably nip any problems in the bud by talking to your roommates up front about your concerns and having them sign an agreement about the use of the Internet.

Also, I have no idea how one would monitor Internet activity or set permissions. My office uses something called SurfControl, but they pay mucho moolah to use it.

Sounds pretty cool. I just googled that stuff. So, I guess that the other piece to the puzzle is a sniffer program?

Yes.

Cool. What sniffer would you reccomend? I have both linux and windows and would like to try this out sometime on my home network. (I'm pretty sure that no one is connecting wirelessly to my router, since I've done everything that I know to secure it. However, this could be a fun project and a chance to learn something new).

I've tried ethereal and another that I don't remember the name of, it has a eye in the logo and starts with an "i", I believe.

My coworker has logging software so he can see where his kids surf.

So far he has stopped his 12yr old daughter from hooking up with a 15yr old. and his 18yr old step son from throwing a party while he and the rest of the family were out of town.

Yeah, I've installed a keylogger on my computer before. Actually bought the program WinGuardian. I don't need it anymore but it worked well.
Told me what I needed to know and that my suspicions were correct. 🙂
