selling and trading away 3 GHZ CPU's because they want something faster. WTF has the world come to.

besides can anyone really tell the difference between a 3.06 and a 3.2 ghz P4??

My 1.47 GHz runs fine. I might put in a SATA drive in a few weeks, and maybe I'll get rid of my tbird 1700/gf3 around the xmas time....

They've been doing that for years. Personally, I don't buy a new CPU until it's about 150% faster in speed than my current one. Same goes for video cards. Let 'em blow their money. I'll buy their stuff for cheap.

I haven't so much as cracked my case open in a year and a half.

my 2.6c @ 2.8ghz in 1:1 ratio is as fast if not as faster then a 2.6c @ 3.2ghz with 5:4 ratio. heh, ratios make quite a difference, people should try testing the 1:1 ratio more. weeeee!

A lot of times, they get these CPUs from Engineering samples, retail events from Intel, etc. I suspect some of them weren't happy with their overclocking ablities etc. So dump on e-bay or FS/FT.

You should come over to FS/FT more often. Except for my case my entire system (or most of it) gets changed out every 3-4 months, piece by piece! :p :D

i don't get it, for me it's about bottlenecks, and right now, the bottleneck is with the HD, untill hd's get a LOT faster, faster and faster CPU's don't really increase your overall system speed that much.

BTW..most in FS/FT probably think OT people are

for always talking about YAGT, YACT, etc. There are parts to be traded and systems to be built and tested.

P3/700 here. I've successfully fended off plenty of "I need to upgrade!" urges. Largely because this machine handles anything I throw at it and there will forever be a good deal coming down the pipe

it's not like i'm never there. i have a dual 2.6 ghz xeon system with 3 36.4 GB Compaq SCSI's Raid 5 that i bought most of the parts for over there. :)

oh btw, did i mention that this same system also has 2 GB of RDRAM. :)

ya, it's a workstation DEMON.

I'm at 2.0 GHz (see sig for specs) and I've been feeling the upgrade bug quite a bit lately. The problem is, I can't really justify it, as there really isn't anything my machine cannot do with ease still.

Still, when I built it, it was the fastest machine around. I kinda crave that feeling again.

i have a hard time believing that as i have a Raid 5 SCSI array with 10k HD in it and i don't see a huge diff with IDE.

I saw a huge difference when I went from a single IDE drive to a two IDE drive RAID-0 array. I can still feel a difference when I use a single IDE drive system.

Well, if you game, the bottleneck isn't the HD. Once the game is loaded, it's loaded and HD speed has little to do with performance.

Enh, I actually have my P4 2.53 underclocked to 1.9ghz right now. It's the time of the year that we don't need to run the A/C, but a hot computer can really heat up the room. Also not playing any 3D games right now.
The cpu is running at 77-79 degrees right now. Cooler than the mboard itself.

that's true. i guess i'm not really much of a gamer as the only game i play is SC: BW and that requires NOTHING as far as Hardware is concerned.

i can't play the first person shooters as they give me vertigo, tho i have purchased TONS of them.

damn, mb i go home catalog them and put them up FS in the FS/FT forum. :)

color me a damn hypocrite i guess. :)

I was just recently upgraded from a K6-3/400 @ 450 to a Duron 850 @ 1GHz due to someone feeling sorry for me. :p

I'm not complaining.

:D

FPS and flight sims are all I play. (except Rollercoaster tycoon and the sims)

The only games that make me want to upgrade right now is BF1942 (Market Garden) and Medal of Honor (the Omaha Beach level). Something is slowing me down pretty bad. I'm not sure if it's the CPU or the video card (GF3 Ti500). Anyone know?
