I was on another site's forum (I know, for shame!) and could not believe how much bellyaching there was about how Android owners not yet getting their Nougat update. Apparently, Verizon is dragging its feet in pushing out the update, and from the posts I read you'd think it was a criminal act. So, all you Marshmallow owners, are you up in arms 'cause you don't have the latest and (?) greatest today? My S7 Edge came with 6.01 and while I thought it might come with Nougat, I am not banging on my "software update" button, wondering where the hell it is. Just me?

OK, this thread has seen the end of its usefulness.

That does seem like a long time to wait. So who decides when it gets pushed out, the provider or the device manufacturer, or both?

I haven't seen anything in Nougat that made me NEED it. But I do have it because Verizon essentially forced it on my Turbo 2 today (nag messages that won't go away, and automatic download of the update when on WIFI.

edit: So far there don't seem to be many significant changes except that the Apps list scrolls in one long vertical list instead of swiping screens horizontally side to side. And the new Messenger app is hideous, wastes a ton of screen space, and the notifications that take over the screen no matter what you are doing (that can't be modified - they are either all the way on, or completely disabled) are extremely annoying, especially when they pop up in the middle of a game or a movie/TV show.

Well, that's interesting. Verizon was the provider everyone was bitching about, and today you got it. I believe I've heard as much negative about it as positive, if not more. Keep in mind you can use any messaging app you like; I opted for Textra.

I'm still on kitkat. It mostly does what I want. There's a terminal emulator that requires ≥lolipop that I'd like to try, but it probably sucks like all the other android programs, so it isn't worth the hassle of retaining root to try it.

There is nothing about Nougat worth getting. Small visual improvements on my OP3, but that's mostly due to OOS4.

Multitasking is.. Well, way overblown in importance. pretty much useless for me, and on top of that it's buggy.

I did get worse battery life though, so there's that.

On the S7 it updates the UI to the Grace UI used on the Note 7. That's really the only reason I want it. I'm willing to wait for Samsung to release the 7.0 U FW though (because that's what I'm running on my Edge on Verizon). I had a Turbo 2, but I gave it to my sister and she's on T-Mobile so the DT2 probably will not get pushed the update.

I find it amazingly hilarious that Verizon pushed 7.0 to the DT2 before the S7.

I've seen quite a few people posting about battery issues after the update. My battery life is about the same, but my phone was charging a lot slower. I cleared the cache partition and it fixed the problem for me. Other people reported the same results, so you might want to try that.

People who think that Android update is *that* important should have known by now not to buy phone from carriers and/or has a carrier branding. It's just common sense. After that, choose phone manufacturers who have proven recent good track record in quicker updates than the others (read: not Samsung).

I'm guessing that more than 75% of the online complainers have a Samsung from Verizon. This has likely happened to them almost every single generation of Samsung that they owned, but did they learn a lesson for the next Samsung generation? Probably not.

How do i do that?

I came from plug'n'play WP so Android maintenance is unknown to me.

I know that factory reset would be best (id also get a new faster filesystem with it) but i am for some time now in a phase where i just dont want to mess with anything..

Verizon's branded unit going to get it before the Unlocked S7/Edge does.

I agree with your first point though. If updates to android are that important, the only phone in consideration should be a Nexus or Pixel.

This news from January didn't pan out? http://www.androidauthority.com/nougat-now-hitting-stable-channel-galaxy-s7-s7-edge-units-743525/
Extremely slow rolling out period maybe?

Anyway, this randomness just proved my other point that people who care about update so much should stay away from Samsung altogether.
The US Unlocked is model number 930/935U. It's on a quarterly update schedule. It didn't sell well because people in the US are stupid and would rather have a branded carrier unit for $30-50/mo instead of $700 outright.

Been running Nougat on my 6P. I like a few features (multi-window, quick switch apps), but other than that, it's not that impressive.

Still waiting for OTA update for my Nexus 6, I wonder if I'll have to manually update?

Is it possible to manually update and keep all my existing apps/settings/passwords?

i manually installed the Lineage OS rom with Nougat onto my Nextbit Robin.
battery life is worse than stock ROM that was on android 6.x
and normally i dont mess with custom ROM, but i had to because the Pebble 2 keeps disconnecting with the stock rom.

I put Lineage on my devices. It's still early days for the ROM, but it does pretty well. Battery life about the same after the first week. Have root and can still use Android Pay.

As for people only listing cosmetic changes as the "only" changes for Nougat, just stop. Especially observing your OEM launcher and thinking that's the extent of Nougat.

Customizable quick tiles, a much more convenient shade (existed on other OEMs before, yes), screen off = doze, choosing your webview provider, quick app switch with recents double tap, mix of JIT and AOT compilation (the main culprit behind Nougat early days battery issues) so as to avoid the long re-compile on updates, long press app shortcuts (which can themselves be placed on the homescreen), system-level implementation of quick reply in notifications, system-level night mode, etc.

Nougat is a pretty solid update. I expect Android O to be to Lollipop what KitKat was to ICS.

Or, just perhaps, they don't have $700+ lying around; that hardly makes them stupid, but I'm thinking you may be for making such a crack. BTW, my GS7 Edge is $26/mo with my S5 trade in. Guess that makes me just dumb.

I have Nougat. Naturally, since I have a Nexus 5X. :) But I've never tried multitasking, barely heard about it, and have no interest in it.

If you don't have enough money to be able to buy your phone outright, I don't think you need to buy such an expensive device, honestly. It might make sense to take advantage of the 0% financing offered by a carrier if you're 100% aware of the catches that come with it, but most people just see up-front cost (generally just the taxes on the phone's retail) and say yes.

You only got about $100 for your S5 trade in? You would've gotten more than that on Swappa, where they start at $120 and go from there.

The unlocked model was $700. If people had purchased it more, not only would we have probably gotten a better update schedule from Samsung, but the person who bough the phone would not have been beholden to a carrier at all - the U is agnostic, and supports every carrier, even Sprint.

No, I got considerably more for my S5 than that, far more than any of the other providers were willing to give. Regardless, it's absurd to say that because you can't buy the phone outright, you should be using some cheap POS instead. Really? I cannot tell you how many products I've bought over the course of my lifetime via interest-free payments. Appliances, cars, you name it. And now all of them (except my phone, YET) are paid for and mine. Sure, I would have preferred to buy an unlocked model, but sooner or later you going to the provider for service, and THEN you are beholden. Lastly, as I said in my OP, who the hell cares if you get the latest OS rollout first, last, or in between. Just another first-world problem for people who haven't any real ones to obsess over.

As I said, for most people, they shouldn't be buying them, especially at the rate normal people break their things, and then they freak out when they find out how much it costs to replace it. I guess I wasn't clear enough; when I said "afford to buy it outright" I meant "afford to replace it at retail". It was implied.

If you buy an unlocked, carrier agnostic phone like the 93xU S7/Edge, you are not locked into any single carrier - nobody does contracts, and you can freely switch without paying anything except the service you used.

I was talking about how much you got for trading in your S5, because $26/mo times 24 months is $624, and the retail for an S7 flat is around $670+tax. Depending on your taxes, that's about $100 difference or less.

Well, in any case, I started this thread to see how many of you jumped on the upgrade as soon as it came available. I'm holding off, mainly because the verdict, as far as I can see, is not yet in. Some users already have 7.1.1, so clearly fixes have been applied and released. I'm glad for those who have had a positive experience with it, but I've read so many threads that are 180° from that, and don't feel as though I'm missing anything that is drop-dead essential. Between Samsung's version and Verizon's on top of that, and way no way back except rooting (bye-bye warranty) and flashing a stock ROM, the picture looks doubtful. I suspect the day will come when either the manfacturer or provider will force me to upgrade; perhaps by then they will have a version that doesn't break more than it improves.
