Have you ever walked into companies and handed them your resumes?

Gonna be laid off sometime in the next couple of months, so just wondering how successful this strategy has been for others. Were the companies annoyed that you did this, or receptive of it?

It's kind of hard to do. If the company is a bigger one, the security at the front door will stop you and you'll never get to the H/R department. Smaller companies might allow you to do this.

The best thing to do:

1) Research the company.
2) Write a customized cover letter to go on top of your resumé explaining how you could add value to their company.

best thing to do is network. it helps you get your foot in the door and you should also get a thumbs up from the person that you are going thru. recommendations always help.

I figured that would be the biggest problem with taking this approach, but I've read on some sites that while this approach is pretty rough, it shows the company your aggresiveness in obtaining a position with their organization.

I've updated and put my resume up on monster, careerpath, hotjobs; also told my friends of the situation so they can let me know if they hear naything about companies hiring. I'm also checking craigslist, maybe I'll find something suitable on there.

So far I've only gotten calls from Aflac and Primerica, but seems like they're pyramid scheme companies.

I can't comment on Aflac, but Primerica is a major waste of time. Don't bother. It's just another one of those things where they try to get you to annoy your friends and family by trying to get them to sign up for things they don't want, and to try to get them to work for Primerica too.

He dodged a couple of my questions, or gave vague descriptions about the job responsibilities. I then told asked him if it was a commision based position, he hesitated for a second and said "Yes". Told him I was only interested in salary or hourly positions...

I did this when I got laid off from my last job and all it got we was a bunch of nothing and wasted time.

I've had by far the most luck using staffing companies. The one I've used has been Teksystems and they've gotten me a total of 5 or so jobs.

Just my two cents.

You mean temp agencies or did these companies actually find full-time permanent positions for you?

EDIT: I have had a job through a temp agency before, and am signed up with like 3 of them. In my experience, while the pay was decent, I was looking for something more long-term. Can't picture myself hawking cell phones at the local Best Buy when I'm 30...😛 (I'm 22, BTW)

It works at the mall.

BTW, I would highly recommend Teksystems and Matrix Resources. Both have been very helpful to me in the past.

I'm 24 had have been using temp agencies since I was 17, I have gotten full time at every job I've wanted to stay at, but there as been a few that I knew were just "filler" until I could get a better one.

I've had great luck with using this method, however have many friends that say it hasn't done a thing for them, but I'm the type of person that thinks if I'm using a temp agencies then they're kind of working for me, so I call them every day and keep on top of them to make sure they're looking for something for me. All my friends that always said that the agencies did nothing for them were not like that at all, they'd just sit back and wait for the job to come to them, that?s not reality and not going to get you a job very fast if you take that approach. Now that I've used the same company for the most part through out the years, they seem to place me fairly quickly than someone that is new to them, but I've shown that I'm a good worker and am capable of what my resume states.

I think I just gave you about a $1.50 with this one.

Teksystems and Matrix Resources are one in the same, just branches of the same company.
