Have you ever used Priceline/Hotwire to book a trip?

My dad and I are going to DC in mid-August this year, and we're looking around for the best deal on a hotel/airfare package. Priceline and Hotwire have the best rates, but I just want to make sure we'll actually get what we pay for with these sites. They say taxes and fees are included...is that true? Are there any additional expenses incurred when using these sites?

How do the tickets/reservations work? Is it a good idea to call the airline/hotel to actually confirm that our reservations went through? Also, I know they don't tell you the airline/flight time, but in your experiences, from, say, Detroit Metro airport to Reagan National, would we get a reasonable departure time?

Thanks.

All taxes and such are included. I've used it twice and never had a single problem. My flight times weren't that great, but friends have had better luck there. Both times I think I got 8:00am flights each way.

Not sure when exactly you're going, but www.flyi.com is a cheap DC air carrier with $25/off your first RT ticket when you sign up for their email club. Doesn't look like Detroit service starts until Aug 23rd.

Thanks for the tip. I don't mind early flights, but I'd rather not have late ones. Also, that schedule (August 23) won't work - we're looking at the middle of the month.

Thanks! 🙂

You're really just taking a chance with your flight times. Everything else, like airline and fees, are legit and included. I would imagine that booking further out would give you earlier flight times. Everytime I've flown, planes are less crowded in the morning. It's generally worth it to me to pick my flight times and buy them outside of priceline. But, the couple times I've done PL, it saved me $50-$100 which I thought was worth risking a day of my trip.

You you ask for is what you get. Day and price.

You are at the mercy of the flight times and airlines.

Most times the flight will be at very non-peak hours.

A Friday departure could be a flight out at 11:59 PM. or 12:01 AM.

Unsure on the quality of the hotels and what recourse you have if the hotel does not measure up - dispute the charge?

Since I just found out I'm going to Baltimore for a job interview, I'm bumping for any more info. The company is obviously paying for my flight, but my wife wants to go with me so we are looking for a good deal on a ticket for her.

We've actually found the best price so far by going directly to the America West website. They list a better price than what is listed on Travelocity, Expedia, Orbitz, Hotwire, or Priceline's search service.

How much can you save by doing the name your own price thing on Priceline?
