Have you ever tried stinky tofu (fried)?

I went to Silver Springs last weekend with a group of friends and they order "stinky tofu" for me. We ate at this place called "Hunan Palace".

It smelled terrible, like chicken poop. But it is amazingly delicious. (Unlike Kimchee, which smelled terrible and gave a nasty aftertaste, which I didn't like at all)

How did they make it so stinky? Pickled?

edit: bad spelling

Heh, a restaurant in my hometown was actually forced to stop serving stinky tofu because it stunk up the whole block and every other business on the street complained.

One of my favorite foods from Taiwan. Yummy - fermented deep fried tofu- stinky but delicious...

get used to the smell after a while. while it stinks, it is pretty delicious. even though i hardly eat it. when i did, it tasted pretty good.

my friends always order it when we go to taiwanese restaurants. i can't stand the smell but its pretty good.

I didn't know it was fermented. But it sure taste better than it smelled.

My friend was eating pork blood, I didn't try it because it sounds worse than stinky tofu.

It's been a while, but sure I have...with a family like mine, I was bound to smell it at some point, so it was best to be prepared at a young age. 🙂

I cook fried tofu all the time; but have never heard of "stinky tofu." I like to fry it up, then slather some bread with mayo and tomatos, slap the tofu on there, and bam! a delicious tofu and tomato samwich.

Yeah, I'm asian... and my parents fed me crap when I was younger... I don't quite recall the taste though. I didn't even know I was sucking snails out of their shells for quite a period of time... YUCK.

I heard it's spicy and delicious. People eat abalones all the time, it's in the same family.

no, you eat it with a lot of hot and sweet sauces. I don't think they make the non-fried stinky tofu

My parents and my fiancee's parents are insisting on abalone as a dish at our wedding reception. Needless to say I won't be touching it (or much of the other stuff). I sometimes wonder if I'm really supposed to be Chinese. I even get migraines from MSG.

Are you kidding? I bet it's sliced abalone with sauteed shitake mushroom and mustard greens? I had it at a friend's wedding too. That dish is expensive and delicious. I only got 2 thinly sliced abalone before everyone else wolf 'em down.

Good stuff.

I thought Hunan Palace is at Gaithersburg... (not too familiar with Silver Spring). If you like Taiwanese food, go try "66" at Rockville. It's close by Maxim.
