Have you ever told a non-computer person that you build or have built computers...

When I mean a non-computer person I'm not talking about someone that has never used a computer before. I am talking about people that use PC's for work, or will only use them for opening email or browsing the internet every so often.

The reaction I get when I tell people that I've built my latest PC is quite amusing. They might say "WOW, you can build a PC!? or they might say, "You should go into business and make PC's for people." And of course what they say next is "can you build a PC for me?" By this time I'm slowly moving away from them because I don't need phone calls at 4am that their PC is broken!

It's nice to know that we PC geeks are appreciated I guess.

🙂

Too bad they're not appreciated in the right ways!

Although I have other things they're appreciative of... 😀

Anymore, unless they're my close friends, I don't tell them a damn thing. I hate being called for silly stuff like ",my computer freezes"(with no further detail given), or "my AOL isnt working".

No

My friends know, but I don't tell a lot of people

I am NOT going to get into building computers for people, unless someone wants to pay me twice what dell charges

Yep, pretty funny, the average person thinks it's akin to rocket science... if they knew it's putting ~7 pieces together and attaching ~10 wires, Dell'd be out of business  A pretty big market for paid tech support would probably crop up too.

Yes. And I sell them. And I do tech support (Only ONE person gets free TS, EVERYONE else pays or has it written into their warranty).

I also pick and choose my customers. Their relative IQ dictates the amount of markup. If it is my belief that they will cost me more money than I'll make due to stupid service calls, I'll adjust the markup accordingly.

Unfair? Maybe. Smart business? Hell yes.

You guys just have to realize that you == profit.

Yeah, a girl I told didn't believe me, "yeah riight..."

Like I was constructing motherboards with a soldering iron or something.

My dad told his supervisor that I build my own computers. His supervisor looked astonished and asked where I got the pcbs, capacitors, diodes, etc from and how I knew how to put it all together.

Guess you could say my dad got pwned 😱

That's pretty much the way I ran my business. The bigger the pain in my ass, the higher the hourly rate. heh

yeah most people i tell think i build the components by hand.

Fvck no. Unless you're family or a close friend, I'm not going to say a damn thing about computers other that I own one.

Somehow, all of my friends and my friends' friends found out, and my entire family. So whenever someone screws up their computer... guess who they call

If it's a hot girl or a close friend, then I don't mind so much.

I'm TIRED of being appreciated in that way. "Can you fix my computer?" "Why is my computer doing this?"

I have one guy I sold a computer to over 2 years ago,he still thinks I will ask "How high?"
When he says jump.

He asked a buddy of his yest to call me,and asked if i could come install XP for him,
I told the other guy tell Dan to call Dell, and then buy the 3 year unlimited service contract.

They don't really understand how simple building a computer is. It's really just assembling the parts and putting it together in a case, and loading the software.

I am not even in the computer field but I have 'built' all of my systems for the past eight or so years now. As somebody else mentioned, if people realized it was just putting half a dozen parts together and plugging everything in, they probably wouldn't be too surprised.

I have never built a PC for anybody except for my girlfriend and my mother. My mom gives me enough computer support problems and nightmares no way in hell I would want to do it for other people.
