Have you ever seen the Milky Way?

I've been working at an observatory in Chile and whenever I get to go up to the telescopes at nighttime it is SO easy to see the Milky Way and even the Magellenic Clouds!

With all the camping out I've done, I've seen it one time. That was 35 years ago.

If you've never seen it, it has to be an unbelieveble clear night. Stars are spaced so closely together that the sky looks milky.

The only time I see stars is when I go camping. The street lights where I live drown out everything except Venus and the Moon.

yep. most any clear skied night around here is good viewing for most 'space' entertainment. I've seen some great meteor showers in my back yard (I live in the suburbs, but in the sticks )

Isnt the milky way the galaxy we are in? if so it would be impossible to see all of it at once, as its all around us.

I havent taken astronomy since 8th grade

It's a totally different experience when you get to somewhere really really dark and sparsely populated.

Last year we went to our coworkers cabin (no electricity, no running water) in Sweden and it was amazing. Sure you can see it in many places but you don't get the full view.

I've seen it a few times, but that was when I was at my parents cabin in the middle of teh U.P, which is the middle of nowhere.

ok so after doing some research to make sure im not making an ass of myself... our solar system is in the milky way, so how can you see the galaxy "milky way" in its entirety from the earth?

Or are we referring to the "cloud" of light from one of the arms?

like said in one of the posts above, we are more near the edge of the galaxy.

Somebody explained it better than I can right now, but since we are at the extreme edge of one of the arms of the galaxy, we are looking at the core of teh milky way.

Earth is like an out rim planet, if you like star wars...

Yes but I prefer Snickers. Used to love 3 Musketeers too but not so much any more. But I haven't had one in years. Of course 100 Grands are great too.
