Is there proof that they don't exist?

If any of you are SomethingAwful members, look around the GBS forums for the ghost tale thread. Some truly freaky stories in there. Specifically, look for Wireman, Drain Woman (ughhh, shivers just thinking of the story) and the Screaming Witch.

A story about a ghost isn't proof. Anybody can tell an interesting ghost story, but it doesn't mean there's any truth to it.

As scientific and logical as I'd like to be I've been told many stories from people who would just not mess around with me for fun.

yes kind of... my husband makes fun of me, but i know there was a ghost in our hotel room several years ago.

It was a historic hotel and I had no idea if it was a haunted place or not. When i got back home, i checked and sure enough, there have been many sighings in certain "lake view" rooms (which is the room we were in)

I am not kidding, i saw a "blob" at the edge of the bed. I was up, not half asleep... i know i was not dreaming

I was saying for general interest. I know a story is not proof of existance. That was an aside.

Human's can not prove or disprove ghosts. Same can be said of aliens. We don't have the technology and/or understanding at this time, but enough people claim to have serious encounters to simply ignore the phenomenon. To say they do or don't exist is a premature statement.

You should have tried to touch it. I think I would have tried to slap it. :)

A "blob"? sounds like room service isn't doing their job.

I do not believe in ghosts, and I personally believe that people have "seen them" but it is their mind playing tricks on them. The reason I believe this is I have a few of my own stories that have led me to believe this.

I used to have family that lived up near Chadsford PA, there are a lot of old houses and hotels around there that are famous for being haunted by revolutionary soldiers that died there from their wounds. A lot of people there believe in ghosts and like telling the stories, and a lot of them are extremely freaky. But, usually I would dismiss them as nothing more than tales and the like and just enjoy listening to them.

When I was a teen (17-18) I used to house sit around that area, and there was this one place that I always used to house sit alone (I was required to live there day and night because they were afraid of breakins. The house they lived in was on an old farm, some fields, a big old double story barn, seperate garage, etc. The house itself was extremely old, built almost completely out of brick and had been around for a very very long time (I do not remember the year but the family had paid a lot for it because of its "historical value"). This house was a typical old farm house, except it was huge, it had two living rooms, an old kitchen, a dining room, 3 attics that had their enterences in the most random parts of the house, a large cellar with some weird hallways and a potato cellar that was even deeper under the house, and two upstairs (by that I mean that the two sections of the upper story were seperated and could only be reached by seperate staircases, one in the kitchen, and one in the second living room on the other end of the house. All the rooms were seperated and isolated like that, it was a very weird arrangement and just to go from the kitchen to where the TV room was seemed like a journey.

So suffice to say I was scared shi!less in that house at night, I would always have all the lights on, the TV always on, and I would sleep on the sofa downstairs as I refused to stay upstairs which was extremely dusty and seemed like it was never even used. The place was even spooky during the day time because of the darkness of most rooms and most of the time I sat out on the porch. The house creeked like crazy, the furnace always went on and off, the pipes were old. So overall it was not a fun place to be, but I continued to house sit for the family when they went on vacation (which was often) because the money was very good.

Now that you have the background (which explains why I think the mind has the ability to play those types of tricks on you) I can begin with the crap I began to see. One night I heard a loud crash in the basement, not too loud but it seemed to be followed by some other small crashes and I got up from the table in the kitchen were I was eating and went to the cellar door. I unlocked the old padlock and opened it up trying to remember where the lights were once I got downstairs, before I even took a step I saw this silvery white wind come at me from the bottom of the steps, it came up along the brick wall and rushed past me and disapeared as I stood there motionless. I shut the door immediately, afriad I would see more, and searched the kitchen looking for the cloud like thing I had seen. I saw nothing, and I was deftinately not going down to the basement to see what the crash was. I called a friend to have them come pick me up, I went out of the house and went down the long driveway and stood out by the road until he picked me up and I spent the night at his place.

Another time in the bedroom above the kitchen, while I was going upstairs at night to go to the bathroom I was passing the bed when I saw a rockingchair rocking back and forth on its own. When I went up to it, thinking maybe an open window or something it slowly stopped rocking, later I was told by the family that the chair had been in one of the attics when they bought the house and they sometimes felt very chilly when they sat in it, almost like a draft was near it, yet there was no vents or windows near.

Another time in the daylight as I was going through the house to the family room I stopped and looked at one of the elegantly decorated living rooms and in the corner I saw a figure hovering there in the corner next to and old fake christmas tree still up. Not a boy or a girl, no eyes looking at me or anything, just a figure there floating still in what I can only describe as a fog.

Those were mild to some of the things I have heard of happening in that area, and I remember some other things in that house and a few other that set the alarms off. Anyway I have always tried to forget about it, even though I still did not and do not believe in ghosts. The only way I can think of it, as most of the times I was awake (there were a few times I would wake up to see a silvery smudge in the air floating inches over my body) that my mind was playing tricks on me, and I was so freaked out at being alone in that house my mind formulated the things that happened. It still creeps me out today, but luckily I think the mind can be a very powerful thing.
